Stop sprinklers before they hit the glass
The single most effective prevention is free. Adjust irrigation and sprinkler heads so they do not spray windows directly. In Redlands and the surrounding Inland Empire, mineral-heavy water evaporates on glass and leaves calcium and magnesium behind. Redirecting that water keeps the problem from starting in the first place.
Clean windows on a regular schedule
Most local homes do well with two exterior window cleanings per year — once in spring after pollen and wind season, and once in fall before the low winter sun exposes every streak. Homes near open land, canyons, or heavy irrigation often benefit from quarterly service. Fresh deposits wipe away easily; long-standing deposits bond and etch.
Remove water spots as soon as they appear
When you see the first white spots after a sprinkler cycle or rain, do not wait. The sooner they are treated, the more likely they are to dissolve cleanly. Letting them sit through the summer heat turns a quick cleaning job into a restoration project.
Consider a professional glass sealant
A professional glass sealant makes the surface less hospitable to mineral buildup. Water beads up and slides off instead of drying on the glass, which means fewer spots and easier cleaning between visits. Sealants are especially useful on windows that get hit by unavoidable overspray or frequent rain runoff.
What to avoid
Avoid abrasive pads, razors, and harsh acidic cleaners on residential glass. They can scratch the surface or damage the seals and frames. The same caution applies to stone and tile nearby — skip vinegar and lemon-based cleaners on marble and travertine because they etch the stone permanently.
